About Toto
Toto was founded in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro, David Paich (who at the time were also acclaimed studio musicians with Boz Scaggs) and singer/bassist Bobby Kimball. Their name is derived from the Latin word which means "all encompassing," the group was determined to explore every style of music.
In 1981 Toto's third album Turn Back was a flop however, they bounce back with their fourth album Isolation which contains two hits, including the title track and Roseanna. The album and the tour made them a household brand all over the world.
After a break of couple of years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in 1986. The album is an departure from the ballads of previous albums, and features some heavy rock. The album was their first to be certified platinum in North America.
When they record the band's fifth album, the band loses their manager and is put in financial difficulty. They decide to change their name and make a new album using a new producer. Lead vocalist Fergie Frederiksen is let go and replaced by Joseph Williams, son of legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph is more natural as a frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a much needed boost.
The band released Mindfields in 1999 and embarks on a huge tour around the world. After a few weeks in Europe the band travels to Japan for sold-out shows. After a brief break, Toto resumes their recording and release their first live album titled Absolutely Live in 1993. This includes a cover version of Weezer’s song Hash Pipe as a response to the band's performance in Africa on their recent tour. Toto's touring lineup is completed by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.
